Teachers today have many influences internal and external convincing them to use technology in the classroom, but most importantly they use it to make sure their students are prepared for society and can go out into the world in the 21st century feeling confident in using the technology around them. Students on the other hand like the way technology can incorporate specific environmental factors, psychological factors, and personal filters that work best for their learning.
The ISTE standards are used to keep teachers accountable for understanding and implementing technology in the classroom. One standard I find particularly meaningful is the Leader Standard which enforces educators to seek out leadership opportunities to support student success and improve teaching. I believe being a leader is the most important trait in a teachers so this standard goes hand in hand with the job title. One standard that might be outside my skill set as of now is the Designer Standard which states educators should design learner driven activities to accommodate to learner variability. Because of my minimal knowledge on classroom technology that is something I can improve on.
The term digital native refers to people who have always grown up in a world with technology. I agree with this term because technology has greatly changed the way the world is run and for someone that used to live without it, it is almost as if they have two different styles of living. I have seen some slight difference between teachers who are digital immigrants and students who are digital natives, sometimes the students in a classroom know how to work the projector or apple TV better than the instructor who is supposed to understand the equipment they are working with. I think my future students will be extremely digital in the way they learn, even as I work as a camp counselor now, six year olds have iPhones and know how to work them just as well as I do.
